Bitcoin 0.8.2 BETA

Copyright (c) 2009-2013 Bitcoin Developers

Setup

Bitcoin-Qt is the original Bitcoin client and it builds the backbone of the network. However, it downloads and stores the entire history of Bitcoin transactions (which is currently several GBs); depending on the speed of your computer and network connection, the synchronization process can take anywhere from a few hours to a day or more. Thankfully you only have to do this once. If you would like the process to go faster you can download the blockchain directly.

Running

The following are some helpful notes on how to run Bitcoin on your native platform.

Unix

You need the Qt4 run-time libraries to run Bitcoin-Qt. On Debian or Ubuntu:

sudo apt-get install libqtgui4

Unpack the files into a directory and run:

  • bin/32/bitcoin-qt (GUI, 32-bit) or bin/32/bitcoind (headless, 32-bit)
  • bin/64/bitcoin-qt (GUI, 64-bit) or bin/64/bitcoind (headless, 64-bit)

Windows

Unpack the files into a directory, and then run bitcoin-qt.exe.

OSX

Drag Bitcoin-Qt to your applications folder, and then run Bitcoin-Qt.
